Causes of Bruxism
The causes of problematic bruxism is relatively unknown, though several conditions are known to be linked to bruxism.
It is theorised that certain medical conditions can trigger bruxism, including digestive ailments and there is clear evidence to suggest that stress is a predominant factor.
A recent article in the Irish Times (click here) suggests that job insecurity and the recession is to blame for the recent increase in teeth grinding.
Other known causes are:
- Sleep disorders such as snoring & sleep apneoa
- Drinking alcohol excessively or before going to sleep
- Smoking
- Drug use
- Depression or other anxiety related disorder
